Scientists today noted impressive new proof that green, or unroasted, espresso beans can make a large reduction in bodyweight in a somewhat short period of time.
In the research, Joe Vinson's research group explained how a group of over weight or obese individuals who used several milligrams of ground green coffee beans every day lost about 10 percent of their weight.
"Based on our results, taking numerous supplements of green coffee extract a day - while eating a low-fat, healthy diet and exercising regularly - appears to be a safe, effective, cheap solution to eliminate weight," said Vinson, who is with the University of Scranton.
The analysis involved 16 over weight or obese people aged 22-26 years who took capsules of the extract or capsules containing a placebo, an inactive powder, for a total of 22 weeks. The experimenters alternated between a low dose and an increased dose of the extract. The lower dose contains 700mg of the coffee extract, and the high dose was 1,050mg. It had been an alleged "crossover" study in which people cycled through the placebo and the two doses, each for six weeks. Such studies have each individual serving as his or her own "control," enhancing the likelihood of getting an exact result.
All the participants diets (calories, food consumed, etc.) and exercise habits were closely examined while on the study period. "Their calories, carbs, fats and protein intake didn't change through the study, nor did their exercise regime change," Vinson said.
Individuals dropped on average 7 pounds during the 22 weeks of the analysis. For most testers, this was 16 percent of their total body fat. Vinson noted that weight reduction may have been somewhat faster, except that individuals received the placebo and the reduced dose of green coffee extract for part of the study period.
